Cleaning Hard Water Stains

Quick and easy to follow cleaning techniques to clean hard water stains using home-made cleaning solutions.

If your home is in an area with hard water your faucets, showers and toilets can have an unsightly stains from mineral deposits and soap scum. It’s difficult to completely prevent the appearance of these spots due to the natural build-up of alkaline deposits in hard water. Luckily these stains can be cleaned with non-toxic cleaning solutions.

Cleaning Chrome Faucets

All you need is a lemon, a bottle of white vinegar and paper towels. First, rub the rind of the lemon over the faucet. Soak some paper towels in white vinegar and place them directly over the lemon coating. Leave for an hour, the combined acids will loosen the mineral deposits. After removing the paper towels, rinse any residue from the faucet then wipe clean using a soft cloth to end up with shiny chrome faucets.

Cleaning the Shower

If you are up for sparing some white wine then you can use it to wash away hard water residue on shower tiles. Fill a spray bottle with white wine and then spray it over the shower head, floor, faucet, drain, shower doors and tiles including grout. Leave for 5 to 10 minutes then wipe clean using a non-abrasive cloth. To finish off rinse any remaining debris.

Cleaning the Toilet

To clean hard water stains in your toilet you can use supermarket branded Coca-cola soda. Pour it around the bowl over the stains and leave for at least an hour. Swipe with a brush and then flush, it’s as simple as that.
